Animal transporter trailer repair in Germany - Slewing ring exchange

A trailer for transporting livestock could no longer be steered properly and sometimes reacted with unexpected movements during parking manoeuvres. We took the trailer to our workshop in 97618 Niederlauer in Germany and set about repairing it.

The reason why the trailer was so difficult to steer was a bent slewing ring. It sits in front of the drawbar, the connection point with the tractor, and ensures that the turning movement of the vehicle is transmitted evenly to the trailer. A bent slewing ring can cause the trailer to suddenly break away at certain turning angles, which not only makes precise manoeuvring when reversing much more difficult, but can also lead to a major hazard on the road. Damaged slewing rings are generally not repaired, but replaced directly.

To access the slewing ring, we first had to remove the drawbar. To do this, we suspended the trailer securely before disconnecting the mass of cables from it. We removed the bent slewing ring, fitted the replacement, ensured sufficient lubrication and reattached the drawbar to the trailer before connecting the cabling. Now the livestock trailer is turning smoothly again with the movements of the tractor.
